Google China Gives Music Away Free



BEIJING -- Google has launched a free Internet music download service in China, which aims to tackle the country's piracy problem by giving users free downloads of licensed songs.

    Thanks for posting this. I've heard of a couple models like this to monetize music through advertisements on websites. My question for the class would be...and I'm just interested in creating the dialog...If we go this route, the consumer does perceive that music is FREE. Will this advertisement idea be "sustainable" to support music? If it's not, music will always be free and we can never go back. Thoughts anyone?

  2. I'm not sure how this would work. Depending upon advertising revenue, I don't know if it would even cover a hit song's needed royalties. Or maybe record labels would work more on the internet and be able to cut jobs so their slice of the pie would be larger. And in turn be able to pay the songwriters and others. I just hope it doesn't go to a flat rate because that could minimize future earning potential.

    PS- Those who make and/or write music deserve their share, I don't believe in FREE music.
