My Summer Reading List--APPROVAL PLEASE! :)

I've been 1/2 joking with Sadiqua about a summer class called "Self-Directed Reading"--about how we would pay $2400 to Belmont to have an instructor direct us to self-direct our reading. haha, right? So, I decided to put together my OWN self-directed summer reading list and save $2400! Please approve my summer reading list, okay? :)

The following I posted to my Facebook page and then decided to share with the rest of you.....

I have so many books sitting on my shelf that still have not been read. I vow to start tackling this project starting now. I recently read 4 major books in just a few weeks (yes, a class requirement--but it felt SO GOOD).

The four books that have jump-started this endeavor:

Diffusion of Innovations by Everett M. Rogers
The Longer Long Tail by Chris Anderson
The Age of Access by Jeremy Rifkin
The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership by Steven B. Sample

This is my summer of 2009 reading list:

The World Is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
Strength To Love by Martin Luther King, Jr.
Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrehreich
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson
Banker to the Poor by Muhammad Yunus
Buddhism for Beginners by Thubten Chodron
The Power of Unreasonable People by John Elkington
Organic, Inc. by Samuel Fromartz
Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert
The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff

(this last one is definitely begging to be read! I subscribe to email newsletters from flowidealism.org and one email a few months ago was reflecting on a this book, The Continuum Concept, which was written in 1975! The VERY NEXT DAY I was in Goodwill (because I love to shop for books there!) and I came across it! Destiny, right? Dying to be read!

WOW. What a list! But there are still SO many more collecting dust on my bookshelf! Maybe I should start a blog to reflect on each book....? We'll see about that one!

  1. A blog of each book sounds great. If you do it please make sure to let me know where to find it since there's no way I'll be able to read that much myself.

P.S. You won't be charging $2,400 for the blog update will you? LOL

  2. Funny that we both are doing this. Although our books differ I plan on reading a few of the books you mentioned. However, I still have to pay a couple thousand for "independent study" classes this summer. Whatever that means. Oh, I'm not bitter :)!

  3. Great list. It is quite a conundrum isn't it. I plan on using that class to read for my thesis, but I know what you mean.

Here are a few other suggestions for your list.

"Awakening the Buddha Within" Lama Surya Das
    "Atlas Shrugged" Ayn Rand
"On Becoming a Leader" Warren Bennis
and various books on "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman

  4. That is a great list and in turn I think you have added more to my summer reading list! I never would have really thought of reading books like this just for the heck of it (I'm more of a fiction girl unless told to read otherwise), but the discussions in our class have motivated me to read more applicable books. I think The World is Flat is at the top of my list so far. I had also made a note to read The Purple Cow by Seth Godin. ~Ginger

  5. I think we all have been inspired Dr. Syb to develope a reading list for the summer. The World is Flat and The lies my teacher told me are definitely on the list.
